Health and Safety Management - Essay Example Creating and maintaining a positive health and safety culture are important to an organization. The Successful and Safety Management (HSG 65) drafts a framework for managing health and safety pertaining to planning, accident and incident investigation, as well as health and safety auditing towards this end. HSG 65 explains the costs of getting it wrong and the likewise good effects of health and safety management to an organization. Knowledge of health and safety management through HSG 65 is aimed at directors, managers, supervisors, owners of small firms, employee representatives, and other key players in the organization who can effectively put into both policies and practice the significance of effectively managing health and safety. The importance of health and safety in organizations is so tremendous that statistics attest that at least one person is killed and over 6000 are injured at work in every working day in Britain (HSE 2003). Work-related illnesses prompt workers and emp loyees to take time off and around 30 million workdays are lost to these illnesses as a result (HSE 2003). In addition to the cost of personal injuries, workers and their families may incur far greater costs from damage to property and equipment, not to mention lost production. The culprit to all these expensiveness and loss of productivity is a mismanaged/mishandled health and safety procedures or even lack of any health and safety management at all. The Sex Ratios Of India
The Sex Ratios Of India Indias growth story has been incredible. The stock markets are doing well. Corporate India is optimistic about India being able to sustain the current growth rate for a considerable period of time. Indian companies are making their presence felt through cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Services and manufacturing sectors are booming. Growth in agriculture may be sluggish as compared to the other sectors, it growing nonetheless. Urban India believes that India is going to surpass the United States of America in a span of fifteen years. However, fundamental problems like malnutrition and corruption still plague our country. But the urban, educated, middle class are not affected by malnutrition and have learnt to live with corruption. There is one problem besides corruption and malnutrition; which is prevalent across all sections of the society and all of them all guilty participants in making this problem a widespread one. The urban, educated, middle class; despite being educated, do not seem to realise the long term effects of their actions. This problem, if unchecked, has the potential to apply the brakes on Indias growth. The birth of a boy child is celebrated, while the birth of a girl child is, well; tolerated. And sometimes, the girl child is killed even before she is born. Sex ratio is the number females in a geographic region per 1000 males. Most developed economies of the world (except China) have healthy sex ratios, with more number of females than males 1. A sex ratio 952 females per 1000 males is considered healthy. The national average as per the 2001 census is 933. Delhi has a modest 915 according estimates in the year 2009 2. As per the 2001 census, Rajasthan averages 922, while Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh average 964 and 978 respectively. Kerala being the most literate state also has the healthiest sex ratio of 1058 per 1000 males 3. However states like Punjab has a dismal sex ratio of 795 per 1000 males, which is alarming 4. The state of Maharashtra too is a cause for concern. With more working women being visible in Maharashtra, there is a misconception that Maharashtra is better off, but facts state otherwise. The juvenile sex ratio is 869 girls to 1000 boys, as on March 2010 11. If India has to continue on the growth path, the burgeoning menace of female foeticide cannot be ignored. But is the common man on the road concerned? No. Why? For one, the common man believes that it is not his problem; but of the feminists, the NGOs, the government, and so on. For another, he believes that the problem is societal, not personal; and hence it cannot affect him. (The common man I am talking about is a reference to the numerous people I have met so far in my life. Gender imbalance is the least of their problems.) Is the problem societal? Crime against women is on the rise and the increasing imbalance between males and females will aggravate it 5. A survey conducted by Jagori, based in Delhi concluded that women face harassment in public places on a continuous basis 6. Since most of the cases of harassment go unreported, the awareness of the magnitude of the menace is abysmally low. An article written by Kalpana Sharma, No girls please, were Indian, (The Hindu, 29 August 2004) calls this problem an epidemic with huge social costs associated with it. My understanding of the articles I have referred to is that gender imbalance would lead to an increase in restlessness among men. Women would become easy targets to vent their frustration. Is the problem personal? We Indians have developed a very wrong mindset. Unless a problem affects us personally, we do not seem to bother. Should women care? Women craving for sons, who have never faced harassment should realise that even they can be vulnerable. Should men care? States like Punjab and Haryana are facing a very grave situation. Due to their heavily skewed sex ratios, there are not enough brides for the grooms within the community. A study notes that 20% men may remain unmarried 6. Another study notes that marriage has beneficial effects on health and survival, with men reaping maximum benefits. Therefore, men run the risk of shorter life expectancy 7. Why is that we do not want daughters? Daughters have always been considered as paraya dhan. Parents consider having a daughter as an expense, a luxury they cannot afford. Taking care of her, educating her, and marrying her off to a suitor, all require huge sums of money. Any property she inherits or assets that she creates go the family she marries into. Families who own large pieces of land have owned such lands for generations. Such families would always want their first child to be male for the purpose of inheritance and keeping the land within the family. Even today marrying off a daughter is considered the biggest responsibility a parent can possibly have. Fears for her sexual safety and security make parents to marry off their daughter as early as possible. Why is that we want sons? The answer is dowry. Though the practice of dowry is made illegal in 1961, it is an open secret that the practice is prevalent even in 2010. We have men in the south proudly telling each other that they have a market value in the marriage market 9. There are men among the rural folk who consider getting married simply to rake in dowry and use it to fund their businesses. Dowry in todays world has taken many convenient forms like a fully furnished apartment, high-end electronics, a four-wheeled vehicle, and huge sums of money. The trend of son preference cuts across socio-economic factors like caste and economic status 6. As a result, dowry related harassment is rising. Other than financial concerns, there are other benefits in having sons. India is a patrilineal society. Sons continue the family lineage (gotra), while daughters lose their gotra of birth and join the lineage of their husbands. This essentially means that sons are the only legitimate descendan ts in the system. Therefore, sons are a source of prestige for a family. As a consequence of these deep seated norms, girl children under the age of 5 face severe neglect in terms of nutrition, immunisation, and clothing. They also face discrimination with regard to schooling. Sometimes female infants are killed within a few days of their birth. With the advent of technology, the trend of sex selective abortion or female foeticide has risen to unprecedented levels. Thirty years ago, these methods were not known. The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act (PNDT) Act prohibits doctors and clinics from using pre-natal diagnostic techniques, such as scans, to determine the sex of a foetus. First offenders would face a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 and repeat offenders would risk a five-year imprisonment and a 50,000 fine. The act also prohibits any advertising for diagnosis facilities. The act notwithstanding, the awareness of sex selective abortions were popularised with the mushrooming o f unregistered, illegal, small clinics by advertising the benefits of sex selective abortions through messages like It is better to pay a small amount today for a sex-selective abortion than a larger amount later for your daughters dowry. The government, on its own, has not been effective in enforcing the act. The government has a myopic take on the issue. Since this issue cannot be treated as a plank to garner votes, the long term after effects of sustained gender imbalances on demography are not being considered seriously 10. All hope is not lost. Many NGOs have launched sting operations, such as luring doctors into revealing the sex of a foetus. While often receiving wide publicity, these initiatives are proving somewhat less effective for legal reasons, as proof of criminal wrongdoing is often difficult to establish. But they nonetheless have had an unmistakeable impact on clinic operators in some areas, who have come to realise that the Act can be implemented by non-official entities. Other than stings, NGOs have been also been instrumental in spreading awareness through campaigns like Save our daughters, Laadli 1 million signature campaign, FADA movement by Deepalaya, Jatha campaign by Jagruti, and recently, the programme Santulan by the Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan, to name a few. Actress Gul Panag has taken up the cause in Chandigarh and has partnered with a city based NGO called Samsher Singh Foundation to fight female foeticide 8. Notwithstanding these initiatives, at a personal level, we must spread awareness of the issue. A growing India not only needs to debate on fiscal deficit and current account deficits but also on the daughter deficit. The issue needs to be talked about more often to make it relevant all the time. Changing the mindsets of a billion people will not happen overnight. The youth and newly wed couples need to be sensitised about the issue. I advocate certain fundamental changes in the way we think to bring about the change. The urban, educated, middle class can be targeted first with these ideas. After there is a considerable change in the mindset of the middle class, these ideas can be trickled down to the grassroots. The primary problems of lineage, inheritance, and girls being treated as paraya dhan need to be addressed. The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 gives women equal rights of inheritance of land and property. This empowers the women economically and treats daughters as equal financial providers. Second, sons are no more providing for the parents during their old age. Sons are moving out of their ancestral homes, are staying away from their parents and are starting families of their own. Parents of sons are also not assured of constant personal care from their sons in their old age. Now in such a context, it does not matter if the parents have sons or daughters: they are going to stay away anyway due to a variety of reasons and they will be playing roughly equal roles when their parents need them. Third, the concept of a patrilineal society needs to be done away with. The very notion that a daughter would be part of another family after marriage should be erased. Daughters, not jus t sons, can also be considered as legitimate descendants. The children of the daughter need not be thought of as children of another family. In the United States of America, a child can take the surname of either parent. Though it is not a norm here in India, the government is not stopping us from doing so. Now with respect to dowry, young men need to be sensitised about the issue. They need to be told that the fact that they are proud to have a market value is detestable. They need to be taught that it is unethical to think of dowry as an opportunity for instant money. Traditionally, parents of the girl perform her wedding and bear all the expenses. This has to change. Parents of the boy should also shoulder the burden of performing the wedding and share the expenses with the parents of the girl; it is after all the wedding of their son, what is the shame in bearing the expenses of their own sons wedding? Better still, the boy and the girl should be made accountable for the expense s incurred. It their own wedding, why make their parents shoulder the entire responsibility for the expenditure? The fundamental assumptions which would make these changes work are that the urban, educated middle class are liberal in their mindsets, love their sons and daughters roughly equally, and have inflated egos. By hitting on their egos, by enquiring about their capability to fund their own sons wedding, these changes can be driven home. It would too naive to think that by making these changes, we would quickly achieve a healthier sex ratio. These changes are easier said than done, because they are too radical. Even the urban, educated, middle class would find it difficult to digest and assimilate these changes because the existing norms have been around for centuries. Small successes should be celebrated and propagated. It would take years for these changes to provide material results. Eventually, when these changes produce results, one cannot rest because these changes will still have to trickle down among the rural and poorer sections of the society. For India to be an economic superpower, all sections of the society should have a healthy sex ratio within their communities. It is a long and arduous journey ahead. (I have quoted references for most of the facts, results of a survey or study, and certain opinions by authors like Banashri Savanoor and Kalpana Sharma stated in this article. Everything else is either a culmination of my readings on the subject or purely my personal opinion. I shared my ideas on this subject with my colleagues where I worked and they appreciated them. Their feedback was that these ideas are logical, but making it practical would be very difficult.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_sex_ratio http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Delhi-sex-ratio-takes-a-nose-dive/articleshow/6555979.cms http://www.iloveindia.com/population-of-india/sex-ratio.html http://www.e-pao.net/GP.asp?src=20..280810.aug10 http://legalserviceindia.com/article/l292-Female-Foeticide.html http://www.idrc.ca/en/ev-120929-201-1-DO_TOPIC.html http://www.economist.com/node/16789152 http://www.bollywoodworld.com/bollywood-news/gul-panag-to-fight-against-female-foeticide-110519.html I have drawn such a conclusion from my personal experience. I hail from Hyderbad, and it is common knowledge that certain communities like the Reddys, and the Gouds are known for their exorbitant dowries. The talk of a market value for men started during my college days. It was one of the most discussed topics in most circles. When I graduated and started working in Mumbai, there was a small Telugu community within the workplace, and I was shocked to hear the term market value, again; among older men. The very notion of a human being, man or woman; being treated like a commodity enrages me. I have been reading up on this topic from quite a long time and has become close to my heart. That is why I have chosen this topic. My views on the bias against the girl child and the PNDT are a culmination of my readings on the subject. Facts and advertisements for the clinics have been taken from PC-PNDT Handbook for the public, http://pndt.gov.in/index2.asp?slid=6HYPERLINK http://pndt.gov.in/index2.asp?slid=6sublinkid=58HYPERLINK http://pndt.gov.in/index2.asp?slid=6sublinkid=58sublinkid=58 . The views on the government are entirely personal. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/as-law-crawls-maharashtra-sex-ratio-drops-more/649580/1

Organic Chemistry Essay -- Chemistry
Chemistry has been called the science of what things are. Its intent is the exploration of the nature of the materials that fabricate our physical environment, why they hold the different properties that depict them, how their atomic structure may be fathomed, and how they may be manipulated and changed. Although organic reactions have been conducted by man since the discovery of fire, the science of Organic chemistry did not develop until the turn of the eighteenth century, mainly in France at first, then in Germany, later on in England. By far the largest variety of materials that bombard us are made up of organic elements. The beginning of the Ninetieth century was also the dawn of chemistry, all organic substances were understood as all being materials produced by living organisms: wood, bone, cloth, food, medicines, and the complex substances that configure the human body. Inorganic material was believed to come from the Earth: salt, metals, and rock, just to name a few. à à à à à Because of the humanââ¬â¢s wonder of natural life, organic materials were believed to possess an enigmatic ââ¬Å"Vital Force.â⬠Thus organic chemistry was separated from inorganic chemistry, and it became itââ¬â¢s own field of science. By the turn of the Nineteenth the ââ¬Å"Vital Forceâ⬠theory was immensely discredited, but this branch of science still stayed separated from inorganic chemistry. Back when Organic chemistry was the chemistry of living matter, Professor Wohler succeeded in synthesizing in the laboratory an organic compound previously observed in living tissue as Urea. Professor Wohler made this organic compound from non-living chemical substance, Ammonium Cyanate. He evaporated a solution of Ammonium Cyanate to produce Urea. Thus rendering the ââ¬Å"Vital Forceâ⬠theory to be with flaws. Other famous experiments proved the vitalism theory was wrong. In 1845 Kolbe synthesized acetic acid, the chief component in vinegar, in a flow of reactions starting with Carbon, the experiment is demonstrated better defined since acetic acid (C6H4O2) is a carbon-carbon bond. The theory of vitalism, like many other scientific theories, disappeared slowly under the weight of accumulated evidence rather than as a consequence of any one brilliant and enlightening experiment. Structural theory, which developed in the 1860ââ¬â¢s, started the second major period of growth in the organic chemistry field. The de... ...reactions were already known and in active use to synthesize organic compounds into other compounds, only with this understanding of the nature of a chemical bond did a clear reason of the nature an mechanism of chemical reactions begin to appear. This will be clear when one realizes that the transformation of one molecule to another, a chemical reaction, requires the breaking of some bonds and the making of others. This process could not be understood until one knew what a bond is. Thus if the nineteenth century was devoted to unraveling the fixed structures of molecules, the twentieth century will be devoted to the study of their transformations. The study of science and more specifically the study of organic chemistry is an on going affair. In the scientific community one never rests, there is a continual stream of experimentation and the desire to explore new realms. The cutting edge in science is grounded in the medical field. How can we manipulate genetic codes the building blocks of life? The things we have learned over the years are allowing us to build those bridges to the future, a future that might see an improvement in the human condition by way of organic chemistry. Mother And Daughter Relationships Essay
What is the ââ¬Å"mother-daughterâ⬠relationship? I have no direct information on this because I am not a daughter. I do, however, have two sisters, and their relationship with my mother is very different when compared to the characters in the short stories ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠and ââ¬Å"New York Day Women.â⬠Relationships between mothers and daughters take different forms for different people. The mother/daughter relationship amongst different people can be the same, but also very different. There are many similarities in the relationships between the mothers and daughters in the short stories, ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠and ââ¬Å"New York Day Women.â⬠One similarity is that there is a foundation of love between the generations. For example, in ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠the mother seems to explain how she feels about her when she was a baby. ââ¬Å"A daughter I have, a beautiful daughter. I took care of her when she could not hold her head up.â⬠The narrator seems to have much love for her daughter, and she tries to make her life better by taking care of her child. In ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠the daughter, Suzette, follows her mother around New York City on her lunch break and comments on what she is doing. In this short story it isnââ¬â¢t hard to see that this daughter loves her mother very much. Suzette also appears to know what her mother does in her everyday life, and with this information she embraces her mother with kindness and love. For instance, she knows that her mother shouldnââ¬â¢t eat anything with sodium because, ââ¬Å"she has to be careful with her heart, this day woman.â⬠Another similarity would be that the cultures of both mothers are held strongly with them, but not as strongly with their daughters. For example, in ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠the mother says, ââ¬Å"You spank her,à sheââ¬â¢ll stopâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ which in Chinese culture it is acceptable to spank your child. However, Natalie replies, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Oh no. In America, parents not supposed to spank the child. It gives them low self esteemâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Which contradicts the Chinese parenting tradition performed to teach obedience to the child. In ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠the mother portrays herself as a person who keep traditions strong but not have them interfere with other cultures such as the American culture. Although the mother remains tied to her culture throughout the whole story, yet her daughter is willing to accept her ways, but not follow them. An additional similarity in the two short stories is the mothersââ¬â¢ efforts in trying to embrace new cultures. It is hard for people of different backgrounds to understand the change in culture in a country where the culture is totally different and diverse. However, the willingness of the two mothers to accept the culture is their way of expressing their love for their children. For example, in ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠the mother finally accepts the culture around her at the end of the story when she moves in with Bess Shea. She encounters things of the new culture and she doesnââ¬â¢t seem to mind them, such as watching bloopers and the birdfeeder. With these little changes in culture she will adapt to the new habitat in which she is living. The similarity in ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠is a little easier to understand because it happens throughout the entire story. In the story ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠the mother walks down the street in Brooklyn while her daughter is following her from behind. The mother seems to have a routine she follows everyday. One example of the mother embracing a new culture is when Suzette is trailing behind, and notices that she stops at the vendor on the side of the street and orders a frankfurter, which is an American meal to most people. Another example, of accepting a new culture would be the argument of the taxi drivers in front of Carnegie Hall, which is very common in New York to have happen. So she sits and waits until the argument is over. The motherââ¬â¢s reply was, ââ¬Å"In Haiti when you get hit by a car, the owner of the car gets out and kicks you for getting blood on his bumper.â⬠These are examples of the similarities between the relationships in ââ¬Å"New York Day Women,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠There are also many differences in the mother-daughter relationships of these short stories. The first difference was how the two daughters acted towardsà their mothersââ¬â¢ old traditions and customs. The fact that Suzette was curious about the motherââ¬â¢s customs and wanted to know more about it made the story ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠a little more articulate. In the sense that I could tell that Suzette knows her mother very well, and will not stop being curious about her mothers traits. For example, in ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠the Suzette follows her mother around the streets of New York. She doesnââ¬â¢t want to be seen by her because she is trying to see what she is does in the daytime. This curiosity leads Suzette to learn how her mother adapts to the city life. On the other hand, in ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠Nattie does not really care what her motherââ¬â¢s traditions are. She only cares about the new way a child should be treated and the way an American acts. This leads to confusion between Nattie and her mother because both are trying to force different customs and cultures Sophie, the daughter of Nattie. Also, in the end, Nattie is so distant from her mother that she rarely goes over to Bessââ¬â¢ house to see her. The second difference between these two stories would have to be the relationships between the two families. In ââ¬Å"New York Day Womenâ⬠the mother-daughter relationship is very close. Just the fact that the Suzette went to follow her mother to learn her customs is loving, but to have almost every sentence begin with ââ¬Å"My motherâ⬠is enough evidence that there relationship is close enough to make the family in ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠look chaotic. With this kind of relationship between them their mother-daughter relationship the love will never end. However, the mother-daughter relationship in ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠is horrible. The mother loves her daughter, but she canââ¬â¢t show it to Nattie because she doesnââ¬â¢t want to let go of her traditions. This leads to the physical abuse of Sophie and aggravation from Nattie, which would head the relationship in a downhill pattern. The families portrayed in these two stories depict very different mother-daughter relationships. In conclusion, the relationships between mothers and their daughter can vary just as the tides of the ocean. The mother-daughter relationship amongst different people can be the same, but also very different, as seen in the short stories, ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠and ââ¬Å"New York Day Women.â⬠. However, in the end family relationships will prevail in good standing, and the love that was always there will rise in the hearts of the families and all will be won inà the fight for togertherness.

Non-Profit Organization Analysis: World Vision
World Vision, founded in the USA in 1950 by a young pastor Robert Pierce, is one of the largest relief and development organizations in the world whose total revenue coming grants, product and foreign donations is about $2. 6 billion. The first area that World Vision focused on was orphans and other children in need, beginning in South Korea, and then expanding throughout Asia. Today, they operate in more than 90 countries, such as Ethiopia, Ghana, Afghanistan, India, Romania, Austria, Bolivia, El Salvador, Mexico, Jerusalem, and Papua New Guinea. They are now focusing on larger issues of community development and advocacy for the poor towards the end of helping poor children and their families build a sustainable future. * Matching Values World Vision has established values that appeal to the morality of the societyââ¬â¢s majority. As a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization, its mission is to dedicate themselves to work with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. Through its public commitment to serve all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender, World Vision operates under its ââ¬Å"Core Valuesâ⬠that are inspiring, admirable and agreeable to most people: It states clearly that they find their call to ministry from the abundance of Godââ¬â¢s love and are committed to the poor and are called to relieve their suffering and to promote the transformation of their condition of life. They value people and regard all people as created and loved by God, therefore give priority to people before money, structure, and systems. They perceive themselves as stewards and are faithful to the purpose for which resources are given and manage them in a manner that brings maximum benefit to the poor. The international World Vision Partnership transcends legal, structural, and cultural boundaries and is responsive to the life-threatening emergencies where their involvement is needed and appropriate. * Informed Leadershipà World Vision has a large organizational structure with its headquarters office complex in Washington and World Vision International offices all over the world, working on six continents. World Vision International operates as a federation of interdependent national offices, each overseen by their own boards or advisory councils. Each office and its members have created a common mission statement. Through an ongoing system of peer review, each national partner is held accountable and abides by common policies and standards. The partnership offices coordinate operations of the organization and represent World Vision in the international arena. For making large scale decisions, the international organization considers opinions from each national office, whether in the developed or developing world. An international board of directors oversees the World Vision partnership. The full board meets twice a year to appoint senior officers, approve strategic plans and budgets, and determine international policy. Meet Community Needs One of the factors that make World Vision successful is it partners with communities, local governments and other offices around the world in order to carry out its mission. It accomplishes this in several ways, depending on the needs of the community, and creates programs where it works with the community to facilitate a range of interventions, including programs in health, water and sanitation, education, and so on. Throughout the programs, people in communities have witnessed how World Visionââ¬â¢s work are supported by highly skilled staff and how the organization is able to develop technical expertise in many areas, which results in innovative, quality programs that contribute to measurable impact on the well-being of the communities themselves. It is the best way to establish good will and great reputation among communities and gain more and more trust and financial support from communities. * Market Positionà World Vision's approach to aid is to first help people and their communities recognize the resources that lie within them. The approach agrees with the modern opinion on how to effectively eliminate poverty. It is believed by many researchers and the society in many developed countries that with support from charity such as World Vision, communities transform themselves by carrying out their own development projects in health care, agriculture production, water projects, education, micro-enterprise development, advocacy and other community programs. World Vision helps families by trengthening their existing strategies and providing them with new opportunities, especially through microfinance and reliable access to food. Also it addresses to serious health issues that concerns the societies and governments in developed countries, where the organizationââ¬â¢s major financial supports come from. For example, on the common concern about HIV and AIDS epidemic, World Vision plays a key role through prevention, care and advocacy programs around the world, attending individuals who are among the most vulnerable and at risk of HIV and AIDS, exploitation and neglect. The organization also develops programs that address the efficiency of its work to its donors (investors). It has programs like disaster response and management, striving to reduce the impact of emergencies on peopleââ¬â¢s lives. The efforts are geared toward addressing human needs and vulnerabilities in both natural and human-made crises so that human transformation is possible and, ultimately, sustainable. World Vision encourages public awareness about the needs of others, the causes of poverty, and the nature of compassionate response. These efforts include collaboration with media and community participation in fundraising. In all its communications, World Vision often present commercials filled with negative images showing the horrible conditions of impoverished countries and their children. In efforts to persuade the donating communities, it explains the causes and consequences of poverty, war, neglect, and abuse. The marketing strategy addresses this straight up, leaving audiences in shock and awe. They employ a tactic that makes it almost impossible for people not feeling compassion and sympathy, and then it packages a product that can reduce peopleââ¬â¢s guilt through donating. The organization has excellent skills in attracting, motivating, and managing those who are in a position to make a difference. As a Christian organization, World Vision participates in many wonderful strategic initiatives. It communicates and involves Christians through conferences, consultations, training programs and various educational opportunities, as well as partnering with Christian churches while being respectful of other faiths. * Investment and Return Approximately half of World Vision's programs are funded through child sponsorship. Individuals, families, churches, schools, and other groups sponsor specific children or specific community projects in their own country or abroad. Funds are raised from sponsors each month to provide support for the sponsored children or projects. According to World Vision's recent Consolidated Financial Statements, around 40% of their revenue comes from private sources, including individuals, World Vision clubs in schools, corporations and foundations. 27% comes from governments and multilateral aid agencies. 30% comes from other World Vision programs and nonprofit organizations. World Vision organizes various events in efforts to increase awareness, such as the Famine events for world hunger. The organization has successfully raised money from many groups and individuals with this kind of fundraising activities.

Improve Your Workplace Mood with 10 Basic Tips
Improve Your Workplace Mood with 10 Basic Tips Cheer up isnt feedback most of us typically get in our annual reviews, but studies show bringing a positive attitude into the office with you can improve relationships and productivity and make-up for the less exciting aspects of the daily grind.Try these 10 simple steps from The Undercover Recruiter to boost your mood and help you bring your A game every day!1. Eat HealthierIve never met a vending machine I didnt like, but I know that empty calories and sugary snacks during that 2 p.m. lull are not my friends! I started outsmarting temptation by bringing small baggies of almonds, trail mix, or granola bars to cut down on snacking, and using what I saved in the break room to treat myself to salads or fresh food options at lunchtime.2. Get Some ExerciseSome companies are able to offer discounted gym memberships or other workplace incentives to employees who take the time to workout and enjoy those exercise endorphins. Whether its a walk at lunch, a shift at a standing desk, or an earl y morning spin class, give your mind and body the energy they need by getting whatever exercise you can!3. Get More SleepI have to trick myself into this one by hiding my phone out of reach when I go to bed; otherwise I keep refreshing social media or checking my email despite the fact that literally nothing is going to happen that will need my attention before the morning. Make your bedroom a quiet, welcoming, dark space, and reserve sleeping hours for sleep.4. Give FeedbackIf youre dissatisfied with something at work, the best way to get some changes made is to speak up about it- productively, of course, so youre not just complaining. Talk to your boss or your colleagues if you have suggestions to improve your work environment; you might be surprised what a difference you can make by communicating what you need.5. Show GratitudeWhether youre higher up in the food chain or anchoring the entry-level spot, take a minute each day to express gratitude to someone who makes your job easi er, someone whose contribution you appreciate, or someone who often goes unrecognized. Keeping a journal at home or on your phone can help you document moments that made it all worthwhile, so you have something to look back at on a bad day.6. ReflectAnother task that journal is great for is looking back over the day or week youve just had. Where were you successful? Where do you have room to improve? When you take the time to review your performance thoughtfully, youll move through the workday with more awareness, which can lead to increased satisfaction and better work overall.7. MeditateWhether you take a little time to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths every hour or actually devote 20à minutes of your lunch hour to a more formal practice, meditation is proven to increase calm, focus, and empathy levels. Dont get caught up in a stressful day- step back and recenter yourself.8. Get to Know Your ColleaguesIf youre an introvert like me, this might sound dreadful. At the e nd of a long day, often the last thing I want to do is troop down to happy hour with the people Ive already spent all day with. But whether you strike up a conversation at Patricks birthday party (a.k.a. awkward cake in the conference room hour) or invite your counterpart from another department to eat lunch outside with you, find interpersonal connections at work to help you look forward to each day in the office.9. Help OthersSpending even 10-15 minutes helping someone else out can reliably make you feel better about yourself and your job. Just as beneficial, it may make them more willing to help you out in return someday; youre building social capital and improving your day at the same time.10. Take a Mental Health DayWe live in a work culture that values constant accessibility, putting in extra hours, and pushing ourselves forward incessantly. If youre lucky enough to have paid sick leave, treat yourself to a day where you dont think about work at all. It will all be waiting for you the next morning; after a day away to refresh yourself, youll already be happier on the job.à 10 Simple Steps to Being Happy at Workà Read More at theundercoverrecruiter.com

Civil Rights of the 1960s essays
Civil Rights of the 1960s essays During the 1960s many civil rights movement swung into full gear. Many civil rights activists started to meet and discuss future strategies for civil rights protest. Many activists also started to form groups to help fight against racial discrimination and segregation. Many of these groups chose to use nonviolent resistance in their protests like sit-ins. In 1960 some 50,000 students, both African American and white, were involved in sit-in protests. The leaders of these sit-ins later founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or the SNCC. The students in these protests were tested by white students. Onlookers taunted the demonstrators and dumped food and drinks on them. When the white mob became physical the local authorities gave little assistance. Despite such thing the students were still committed and the tactics proved to be effective. The success of the student sit-ins help to start the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). In December 1960 the Supreme Court ruled that segregation in bus stations was illegal. The CORE leaders planned to send Freedom Riders on bus trips through the South. By doing this they hoped to draw attention to violations of the Supreme Court ruling. When the Freedom riders entered the South violence erupted in Alabama. A mob firebombed one of the buses and on another a man was beaten so bad that he suffered brain damage. The police sent no officers to aid the Freedom Riders. Finally, President John F. Kennedy sent federal marshals to protect the riders. By early 1963 President Kennedy was able to claim that in the past year, segregation in interstate commerce had ceased to exist. The Freedom Riders courage and commitment to nonviolence helped advance their efforts to end racial segregation but, it remained in many areas of southern life like schools and other public areas. In 1962 the NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, obtained ...

Everybody Must Make Up Their Own Mind About Their
Everybody Must Make Up Their Own Mind About Their Everybody Must Make Up Their Own Mind About Their Everybody Must Make Up Their Own Mind About Their By Maeve Maddox The DWT Forum is enjoying a lively discussion of the problem of what do do about the political need to make writing gender neutral without writing such ugly constructions as s/he, he/she, he or she. Some readers still support the use of he in a general sense as was the practice until it came to be seen as a mark of patriarchal oppression. Others defend the use in the title of this post as having historical precedent. In general we recognize that using their with a singular antecedent is wrong, but we instinctively want to do it. Does that make us bad writers or bad people? Of course not. The use of their with a singular antecedent drives grammarians wild, but it is a living impulse in the language and it will triumph. Heres what the OED has to say about it: [their is] [o]ften used in relation to a singular n. or pronoun denoting a person, after each, every, either, neither, no one, every one, etc. Also so used instead of ââ¬Ëhis or herââ¬â¢, when the gender is inclusive or uncertain. (Not favoured by grammarians.) And here are a few examples the OED gives from the works of writers whose quality of writing is not usually denied: 1749 FIELDING Tom Jones VII. xiv, Every one in the House were in their Beds. 1771 GOLDSM. Hist. Eng. III. 241 Every person..now recovered their liberty. 1845 SYD. SMITH Wks. Studies (1879) II. 206 Nobody in their senses would describe Grays ââ¬ËElegyââ¬â¢ as [etc.]. 1898 G. B. SHAW Plays II. Candida 86 Its enough to drive anyone out of their senses. I have to confess that Im one of those writers who rewrites such sentences by putting everything into the plural, but I may pull in my horns when it comes to castigating those of my colleagues who decide to go with the flow. The spirit of English has a mind of its own. It despises such grammarian-inspired constructions as It is I. and One never knows, does one? but it doesnt at all mind Many an explorer lost their way. Google company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Google company - Essay Example The company has attachments to education and libraries as part of their company culture as stated in Guyette, (2007, p. 2). This is a marketing approach implemented to improve the market share. Most of the students are loyal customers of Google and help improve their brand name all over the world. Other contributors to the market share are partnerships and a wide range of advertising done using Ad Words (Guyette, 2007, p. p. 2). Googleââ¬â¢s plan is to make more acquisitions internationally to add on the products that people require and, therefore, fill that market gap and to be more competitive with the competitors in an effort of trying to catch up (Guyette, 2007, p. p. 2). Therefore, this paper focuses on the marketing strategies of Google while evaluating its internal and external environments. Introduction Google, the most popular search engine, was founded by two Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Because of its popularity, it has captured the market attributed t o an industrious and innovative marketing plan team. Innovation is achieved by the many uses that google.com does to its customers who are the revenue earners of any organization as indicated by Fifield (2007, p. 23). The role of every organization is to achieve market success and this achievement is dependent on the customersââ¬â¢ preference. Thereby it is the role of the marketing departments in the organization to win the customers preference. Google has leverage over the other competitors who have led to its competitive advantage in the variety of uses that it grants the customer. The competitive advantage over the other firms instills focus to the marketing program of a firm as stated in Ferrell &Hartline (2011, p. 19). Googleââ¬â¢s marketing strategy is evident on the fulfillment of the want s and needs that the customers desire. It has incorporated all the individuals, companies, organizations and any interested parties through segregation of these target groups as a ma rketing program in the market strategy. Through the use of its strengths and opportunities and constant awareness of weakness and threats imposed on it, the marketing strategy can be formulated matching the needs and requirements of the market ventured (Ferrell & Hartline, 2011, p. 19). Google controls 40% of the market and estimates to control 70% of the market in the near future. The control of the market varies according to countries. For Instance, in a country like France; Google takes 71% of the market share. This reduced market share is caused by the competitors in the market. In the US alone, Google controls 67% of the search market. This was achieved in November 2012 but dipped just slightly in December hitting 66.7% of market share (Goodwin, 2012, p. 2). This significant market dominance is a milestone for Google as a company and as a brand name despite all the competition. Goodwin (2012, p. 2) continues to explain the effect of the competitors on the search market. For exa mple, Microsoft, even with the addition of Bing-powered searches, is way far behind Google. The competition between yahoo and Bing in the month of January 2012 significantly led to the rise of Googleââ¬â¢s market share (Goodwin, 2012, p. 3). Google faces its competition from other companies that are to the same goal of giving people
Bill Clinton's Speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Bill Clinton's Speech - Essay Example Within hours of this confessional breakfast, the internet was a flurry of activity. The news of the speech, and the opinions of this president by millions around the world was spread, and the net seemed to close on William Jefferson Clinton. In a 445-page document, all posted on the internet, Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel, had found Bill Clinton liable to impeachment on eleven counts involving perjury, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and abuse of authority. This indictment was supported by an agonizing and scandalous telling of details. In the Paula Jones case, Clinton had denied, under oath, ever having had sexual relations with "that woman, Miss Lewinsky". Therefore, Mr. Starr has provided a lurid and sometimes funny account of Bill Clinton's "sexual encounters" with Monica Lewinsky, a 21-year-old intern at the White House. This section of the report revealed Clinton "as a middle-aged urchin, dangerously vulnerable, lacking judgment, self-control and integrity. Public attention worldwide has naturally centered on this section of the Starr Report." (Ahmad) The response to the President's speech, varied among the many religious communities of the United States. Several who were present told reporters later that they had been deeply moved by the president's speech Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, general secretary of the US National Council of Churches, the largest ecumenical organization in the country, described the temper of the audience as "deeply spiritual". She believed Clinton to be penitent. She also told reporters that even so she wasn't sure if the United States was "prepared to be led by a repentant sinner." (Herlinger) A well-known African American clergyman, James Forbes, senior minister of New York City's Riverside Church, said in a television interview following the address that "it felt like a real holy moment. There was not a single false note. Here is a man who has been anointed by grace and awaits restoration," said Forbes. (Herlinger) Clinton emphatically denied doing anything wrong, following the accusations that surfaced in early 1998. He clearly stated he had no "sexual contact" with a young White House intern. These accusations were made in the course of a civil lawsuit against then President Clinton, in an alleged act of sexual harassment occurring while he was governor of Arkansas. Clinton was accused of lying to a grand jury about his sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky, the young intern. Having been caught in a series of lies about his personal affairs demanded a public response. That response took the shape of the "I have sinned" speech, delivered September 11, 1998, and one other delivered August 17, 1998. The September speech can be considered effective because it shifted the public focus in such a way that Clinton's character appealed to his audience. (Harris) Considering the two speeches to be Clinton's apologia to the American public several constants can be identified that contributed to the effectiveness, particularly the September speech. 1) Ethical appeals precede logical appeals; 2) Offensive remarks follow defensive remarks; 3) Most evidence appears in the middle third apologia; and 4) The argument resembles previously used arguments. A fifth constant more recently added to this list is an apologia ends with an appeal to

The issue of globalization on a human resource management perspective Term Paper
The issue of globalization on a human resource management perspective - Term Paper Example From this research it is clear that there has been a growing relationship amongst the cultures, economies, and people in the world. Coupled with advancement in technology, interaction has been steadily increasing in the current world. Thus, the people, cultures, and economies are increasingly becoming interdependent of each for their continued survival. This is globalization with the world effectively becoming a big global village. According to Sparrow, Brewster, and Harris however, globalization is ââ¬Å"a process whereby markets and production in different countries become increasingly interdependent due to the dynamics of trade in goods and services and flows of capital and technology.â⬠In this case, the customersââ¬â¢ need for similar commodities and services drive the globalization of markets. With globalization of markets, a challenge in striking a balance between universal tendency in human resource management and the influence of different national cultures arises. Therefore, this expose elucidates the issue of globalization on a human resource management perspective. Edwards and Rees noted that, globalization necessitates attention to ââ¬Å"more than conducting business across national borders but also entails expanding competition for almost every type of organization presenting management with the challenge to operate in diverse cultural settings.â⬠In this regard, the global economy requires a company to exploit its human resources effectively through effective planning in order to gain a competitive edge over its competitors. Therefore, human resource managemen
Cybercrime Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Cybercrime - Research Paper Example People want their personal information to remain that way, personal. But can this really be achieved? Daily there are headlines telling us of yet another story of information being stolen by a criminal or looked upon by the government. Thereââ¬â¢s also the issue of wiretapping phones and having hidden security cameras. Some time ago, AT&T mentioned, ââ¬Å"While account information may be personal to you, these recordsâ⬠¦are owned by AT&T and it may disclose such records to protect its legitimate business records, safeguard others or respond to legal process.â⬠(Lamb, 2011) As history shows, there are truly malicious people among us, and even the most meticulous people can make mistakes, and security experts are becoming very wary of the privacy future for America (Marks, 2008). With such statements, itââ¬â¢s easy to feel that privacy may as well become a thing of the past. Cybercrime can be done in different ways and can occur anywhere. There are two categories of cyb ercrime. The first type involves crimes in which information and communications technologies are the target of offenses. Examples of this are computer vandalism, viruses, and the like. The other type involves crimes where technologies are used as tools to commit an offense, such as computer hacking. These two types are the umbrella categories, but there are many other subcategories involved in cybercrime. The computer may be the agent of the crime, the facilitator of the crime, or the target of the crime. The crime may take place in one location or sometimes in a network of locations. The end results of this type of crime include, to name a few, cyber drug trafficking, child pornography, identity theft, and phishing. But exactly what is being done to fight this? One may ask. The Presidentââ¬â¢s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board (PCIPB) has come up with a draft plan for upgrading the nationââ¬â¢s cyberspace infrastructure. This strategy calls for the cooperation of home computer users, business users, state and local governments, with the overall goal being empowering all Americans to secure their portions of cyberspace. The executing of the plan requires six steps, they being: educating and creating awareness among users of cyberspace, producing more secure technologies, developing a large and well-qualified cyber security workforce, fostering responsibility among individuals for security at all levels, increasing accountability and updating security practices, and finally developing early warning and sharing of information that will help with early detection of attacks and leading to the appropriate response. The US also seeks to ask for the participation of foreign counterparts as well in a peer-to-peer dialogue that aims to make an effective business case for cyber security and attain successful means for partnering with governments on cyber security. (Washington File, 2002) Other states have enacted what is known as a ââ¬Å"security freezeâ⠬ legislation which allows its citizens to lock their credit files against anyone who tries to open a new account or gain new credit, and theyââ¬â¢re hoping this will keep thieves from exploiting stole Social Security numbers. (Lamb, 2006) There are also propositions of making of a ââ¬Å"new internetâ⬠. ââ¬Å"The whole notion of privacy and security has become so elusive that the

PART 3 Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
PART 3 - Term Paper Example It is of significance to posit that for ethical considerations to be followed, health institutions are ought to create and implement appropriate strategies as well as rules and guidelines that will govern the daily activities of the health institution. This involves a lot of financial input and time to create. According to Post Blustein and Dubler (2007), ethics are considered costly. According to him, observing ethics in the workplace will involve a lot of time and effort, egotism, though clients are presented with a chance to benefit from high quality of services. Individuals seeking treatment or health care services in Mount Sinai prefer it to a great extent due to high quality services as a great proportion of ethics is followed. The more the clients, the more the revenue generated by the hospital. This shows that total revenue generated by Mount Sinai Hospital is dependent on ethical considerations. To ensure that ethics are followed by all employees in the hospital, Mount Sinai conducts regular trainings to employees geared towards presenting them with basic knowledge on ethics. This involves a lot of money to plan though it is aimed towards empowering employees. As evidenced in other health care institutions, patientsââ¬â¢ medical records in Mount Sinai are also digitalized. This requires the hospital to design security programs and conform to it. Designing an effective health related programs is in itself expensive and time consuming. Available sources put a lot of emphasis on the importance of ethical considerations in health care. A physician or any other medical practitioner is only allowed to share any information regarding the health of a patient with consent of the patient, or when required to do so by a court of law. Physician can be sued by the patient if s/he is proved to have made public any personal and medical information associated with the patient. In such a case, a health institution may lose a lot of money through lawyer fees. Where a patient requires to be compensated for the damage caused, a health institution would lose a lot of money in settling these cases. Though such a case has been hardly heard of in Mount Sinai, maintaining plans of actions that prevents such occurrences from happening involves a lot of finances and time. If a health care institution is found guilty of breach of confidentiality or sharing a patientââ¬â¢s medical information with third parties, medical license may be cancelled (Ashcroft, Dawson and Draper, 2007). In a nutshell, creating and establishing plans of action that will ensure ethical and moral considerations within a health institution is very expensive in terms of money and time as I involves a lot of effort. Duty to report In the modern world, millions of people have been affected by many chronic illnesses. Millions of people are living with the HIV virus. In other words, people are affected by a wide range of illnesses that necessitates medical attention. In the course of treatment, a physician or medical practitioner ought to treat any divulged information by the patient with utmost confidentiality. However, there are some cases where morally the medical practitioner is supposed to report the matter to authorities. This part of the paper describes an ethical dilemma associated with moral considerations in health care. For public health concerns, the government and the public health sector of a particular country is required to follow up on prevalence of diseases of public concern. For instance,
Porters Model of National Competitive Advantage Essay - 14
Porters Model of National Competitive Advantage - Essay Example The paper tells that a number of studies conducted for the last ten years reveal that outsourcing of information technology permits the companies to decrease their high expenses and boost their productivity. Through information technology, the firms are in a position to enjoy the flexibility and as a result, enhancing the business performance. USA, China, UK, Japan, and Germany are all experiencing information technology outsourcing growth. IT outsourcing has been around for some time and is significantly affecting these countriesââ¬â¢ and the world economy at large. However, it is true that outsourcing IT services offshore brings with it new risks and challenges. The Diamond Porter model is used in this study to determine the competitiveness of IT outsourcing in USA, China, Germany, Japan, and the UK. The model is used to examine the basic industries in the countries. Since Porterââ¬â¢s work was published, about 20 years ago, there has been a multitude of response to his work. Some research studies tallied with his work while others disagreed. However, from the studies, it is evident that some of Porterââ¬â¢s ideas hold while others do not apply in the todayââ¬â¢s modern business settings. In his research, Oz applied Porterââ¬â¢s Diamond Model to monitor the competitive advantage of five industries in Turkey. His findings were tandem with Porterââ¬â¢s ideas. The Turkish customers were demanding and as a result forced the companies to upgrade to meet the demand of the consumers. The intense rivalry in the Turkish domestic market for clothing and glass pushed the companies to be in a position to compete favorably in the international markets. On the other hand, the non-competitive automobile companies in the Turkish market remained non-performers in the international markets.

Is there international law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Is there international law - Essay Example The vast organization that constitutes international law includes an assortment of international traditions, formal contacts, pacts, consensus, and charters such as the United Nations Charter. The United Nations Charter has various codes of conduct or protocols, law courts and summaries of legal agreements which include legal examples of previous decisions handed down by the International Court of Justice. In the absence of a potent governing apparatus to enforce implementation of international law, international law is confined to the parameters where enforcement of international law is only possible when those in power agree to abide by the law (MacCormick 259). The underlying argument of this paper is whether there is international law which every country confides and abides to fully. Countries have different governing systems, and they usually adhere to their own version of international law which might include both case laws and legislation in their country. The adherence to int ernational laws includes practical implications, measures and legal redress. These principles are recognized as part of international procedure which are implemented as a courtesy and respect for the Charter of the United Nations. This Charter includes but is not limited to national and international laws for respecting human rights and the sovereignty of other countries. They also include international laws regarding investments, offshore banking, tariffs, imports and exports, contracts, dumping and much more. However, to be recognized as a sovereign state, it is mandatory for a state to have its own government and defined territory (Wood 169). The sources such as international organization like the United Nations which are involved in the international law making processes face difficulties in formulating and implementing international laws since this is a complicated process that has to take into consideration any issues which that specific international law may produce. Determin ing the basis of international law will also include its claim to legal authority, its legality and rationalization and why should people be in compliance with such laws. The issue of origins is commonly addressed by international scholars by referring to the prescribed sources of international law, most specifically sources that are found in Article 38 of the 1945 International Court of Justice Statute treaty law and universal philosophy and ethics, supported by other reliable sources such as case laws written by renowned scholars. The legal philosophy advocated by Grotius is not written in the constitution, but refers to respect accorded to other sovereign states. This had become absolutely necessary during the early seventeenth century because there was no way of enforcing international law and the monarchies that had power or had seized power refused to adhere to or obey any law except their laws. All disagreements between states were settled by the use of military force (Kammer hofe 88). Conventionally, the states have used established international law makers and have formulated laws that apply to specific issues within their own states and the same laws are applicable to other states and individuals equally. Consequently, there

George Walker Bush Essay Example for Free
George Walker Bush Essay George Walker Bush became the President of United States of America on January 20, 2001. As the President of U. S, he had taken many wrong decisions that affected the economy and foreign policy of U. S. He was successful in lying, cheating, killing and drinking his way to the top. He was victorious in his supposed war of terrorism on two countries and continuously killing and harming innocents. George Bushââ¬â¢s War on Terrorism George Walker Bush has not been successful as a President. As a leader, he assumed near absolute power soon after the September 11, 2001, attacks. He led the war against terrorism and championed both the USA Patriot Act and Homeland Security Department domestically which allowed his governmentââ¬â¢s to take up absolute power over the aspects of the international war on terrorism which included establishment of military tribunals and removing fundamental rights long recognized under the American law. Again Bush was successful in acting unilaterally by expanding his authority as he saw fit to accomplish his aims and objective without any regard to any of the fundamental rights of human beings which all people have whether they are American or not (Altman, 24). He was successful in launching his war of terrorism shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Like a dictator, he ordered the Taliban to surrender Osama Bin Laden. In response, Taliban tried their level best to bring Bin Laden to be trialed under Islamic law. At this, Bush made the decision to invade Afghanistan. After successfully capturing Afghanistan, the U. S captured various prisoners who he believed were associated to Al-Queda. The trouble was that many of the so called accomplices to Al-Qaeda were teenagers. Bush next target was to attack Iraq. In early 2002, Bush declared that Iraqis were developing weapons of mass destruction. He also announced that Iraqi regime was responsible for developing anthrax, nerve gas and nuclear weapons for over a decade (Andrew, 52). Based on this assumption, the United Nations sent a group of inspectors to Iraq to investigate on it. After a systematic and comprehensive search, the UN announced that were no nuclear weapons in Iraq but this was not sufficient answer for Bush. He took the decision to invade Iraq in March, 2003. There was no approval of force found with the United Nations. By doing this, Bush broke all global war agreements. His main intention to wage war on Iraq was for oil. By attacking Iraq, he is getting $5million out of Iraq per week. On attacking Iran, Bush decided to withdraw from the World Court of Law and made a decision that the policies and guidelines of United Nations were completely irrelevant. This showed that Bushââ¬â¢s intentions were to invade Iraq at any cost in order to get control of the oil fields. Bush as a leader George Bush with the help of Clarence Thomas has taken the most far-reaching and drastic standpoint, encouraging the governmentââ¬â¢s right to confine even American citizens as adversary opponents without allegations. The former deputy assistant legal representative in Bushââ¬â¢s Office of Legal Counsel, John Yoo, stand for presidentââ¬â¢s right to order torment if he considers it essential for nationwide security. Itââ¬â¢s not surprising to know that Bush is considered an imperial president who is transgressing assembly and establishing is own laws (Bacevich, 36). The significance of this is the detail that Bush is implementing unrestricted authority and influence and getting away with it because of his campaign in the name of freedom and terrorism. As the president of United States of America, Bush has failed to defend Americaââ¬â¢s freedom and has given birth to his own democracy. He views all threats to his ultimate power as unpatriotic and he had used this early in the war effort and removal of Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan and invading Iraq on false account. Because of his actions, the constitution of United States of America has become meaningless. George Bush has acted more like an imperialist rather than president by imposing his views on the local and overseas affairs calling for removal of other nationââ¬â¢s leaders for the name of democracy. Bush and Education in United States He had passed the No Child Left Behind Act which was suppose to aid schools achieve better grade levels and improved state tests. However, Bush had failed to provide adequate resources to help schools to accomplish the standards of the act (Balmer, 69). Bush and United States Economy When Bush started his term as the president of United States, he made many tax deductions that generally assisted the wealthy. Money that was earned through stock ownership was not taxed but money that was earned by hardworking individuals was to be taxed. The unemployment rate in Bush reign has increased from 4. 2% to 5. 6%. About 2. 4 million jobs were lost in 2003. The unemployment rate went to 9% in 2005. Surveys conducted in 2005 showed that there are 9 million American who are unemployed. The unemployment rate among those aged 16-24 was 13% in 2005 (Blumenthal, 74). Although Bush proposed to eliminate Youth Opportunity Grant program that aims to give training to youngsters. A $225 million program in 2002 was being done away. His proposal of free trade agreements resulted in the loss of job in the United States of America to global market and taking advantage of workers from developing countries (Barber, 39). Bush and Environmental Issues Bush had approved the Clear Skies Act that challenges the Clean Air Act. The Clean Skies Act allows about 9. 9 million tons of varied chemical toxins to be released in air than the Clean Air Act would have if it was implemented. Bush also failed to defend 3 million acres of Tongass National Forest from logging and also had the maximum concentration of bald eagles on earth. He also withdrew from the Kyoto agreement on global warming which had been agreed upon by more than 170 countries (Benjamin, 98). He had also made frequent efforts to authorize oil drilling in the National Wildlife Refuge. Other Facts about Bush He has cut funding for about 375000 low income college students and reduced Pell Grant amounts to such a drastic level that it efficiently caused about 84000 students to be no longer being suitable for Pell Grants. Pell amounts have been cut down for 1. 5 million students. He backed out from the International Criminal Court. He was also the first president in US history who rejected the United Nations Election Inspectors. He had taken 11 authorized measures to undermine reproductive rights. He is also the first president of United States who had criminal record. He had also slashed financial support that was provided to women against violence. He also responsible for 521 billion dollar financial plan shortage in less than period of four years after inheriting 200 billion dollar surplus Conclusion The evaluation of George Walker Bush as the President of United States and compared to previous presidents proves that he was the wrong choice for United States of America. With military troops dying and no end to war, Bush has strained relations with other foreign countries. The strong backing of many nations has been lost by the United States because of Bushââ¬â¢s wrong choices. There have been immense modifications that have occurred due to Bush Administration. Digging deep into the economical, social and political features of U. S, Bush has changed the face of U. S. Work Cited: Altman, Daniel. Frank Sinatra Essays -- Essays Papers
Frank Sinatra Howard Cosell, a legendary commentator, spoke words about this legendary man that more or less sums up his legendary career. He said "Frank Sinatra, who has the phrasing, who has the control, who understands the composers, who knows what losing means as so many have, who made the great comeback, who stands still, enduringly, on top of the entertainment world. Ladies and gentlemen, from here on in it's Frank Sinatra!" Frank Sinatra, the only singer in history to have hit records in five consecutive decades, led a lot more distinctive life than people were led to believe. It all began December 12, 1915, when a boy named Francis Albert Sinatra was brought into the world. He was the son of Dolly and Anthony Sinatra, a pair of Italian immigrants. He was born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey where he spent his teenage years unloading trucks for the Jersey Observer newspaper. He then became a copy boy where he found a passion to strive for, journalism. However, the editor at the newspaper said, ââ¬Å"copy boys donââ¬â¢t know enough to be reporters.â⬠So, Sinatra went to secretarial school. He studied English, typing, and shorthand. The newspaperââ¬â¢s editor eventually promoted him to cub sports reporter After achieving his goal to be a journalist, Frank had another passion to strive for, singing. In his spare time, Sinatra appeared in on Major Bowes Amateur Hour, which was a popular radio talent show back in the day. Frank had never been taught to sing he taught himself. He was a natural. So the head of the Major Bowes Amateur Hour promoted Frank. For $25 a week he sang, waited tables, was the master of ceremonies, and a comedian at The Rustic Cabin. In 1939 a man by the name of Harry James discovered Frank while visiting The Rustic Cabin. He immediately signed Frank to sing for his new swing band. After touring with Harry James, Frank started to sing for with Tommy Dorseyââ¬â¢s Orchestra. After recording more than 90 songs with them, Frank moved on. He then moved to the popular radio show The Lucky Strike Hit Parade, where he worked as the MC. Frankie was a hit! Everyone loved him. He was the first teen model the country had ever seen. Amazingly enough, he almost caused a near riot at New Yorkââ¬â¢s Paramount Theater in 1944.He then signed a contract with Columbia Records in 1943 and left in 1952. So in 1953 he signed another contrac... ... a severe tragedy, a heart attack. It was the first heart attack Frank had ever had. For the next couple years Frank had not been seen in public. In 1998, Frank was back in the news. Unfortunately, it was about Frankââ¬â¢s Health. Sinatra had died of a heart attack at age 82 on May 14. The nation was astounded. This was the biggest music celebrity news since TuPacââ¬â¢s death. News channels everywhere interrupting their broadcasts for this special bulletin. The first teen idol that the country had ever seen was dead. The most ingenious singer the country had ever seen was dead. It was the second time the music had died. His life has touched the world and has forever changed the art of singing, as we know it. Works Cited William, Dean. ââ¬Å"Sinatra, Frank.â⬠Internet. March 14 2000. Scrooge in A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens Essay example -- Charl
A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens Scrooge is represented from the beginning as a miserable old man being described as a "squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!" I think this a perfect description of him in one sentence. People know Scrooge well and avoid him, this suites Scrooge because he does not like other people and not a big fan of being sociable. The name 'Scrooge' was created by Dickens and is now well known in the dictionary as someone that is mean, this is basically what Scrooge is in the novel, a symbol of meanness. It is described that the people know Scrooge well and avoid him as much as possible. Although this suites him well because he does not like other people, and is not sociable in any way. Dickens makes you dislike Scrooge from the very beginning by using a number of methods such as, the described setting and Scrooge, how he treats the poor, the language used etc. The setting he's in is just like him, cold, gloomy, small and cheap. His treatment to the poor is appalling as when he is asked to give a donation for them he replies, "Are there no prisons?" "And the Union Workhouses?" this is very harsh and selfish, because he is basically saying they should be put in prison instead of trying to get money off of him, this instantly creates bad impression on him. His counting house is described by Dickens to be like a "dismal little cell", this gives the impression that it is cheap, dark and cold because the fire he describes is so small its as if it only has one coal. Being so cheap and not wanting to spend anymore money than he has to he only employs one person Bob Cratchit (... ...ery clear that, is you are not kind to people then you will have something bad happen to you in your afterlife. This is proved clear when Marley's ghost appears, and explains to Scrooge that there is "'No rest, no peace. Incessant torture of remorse'" as he when he was living acted just as Scrooge does. Dickens portrays Scrooge in many different but excellent ways and makes you feel a real sense of hatred for him by doing this. By setting the novel in the Victorian era it helps to create an image of the destitute poor and how badly people like Scrooge treat them. The actual setting he is in is similar to Scrooges personality and features, the use of similes and other descriptive language all add to Scrooges nasty nature. To sum up what the reader is encouraged to feel in the first chapter is basic hatred for Scrooge.

Resource Allocation Essay
Project management is the discipline of defining and achieving targets while optimizing the use of resources: time, money, people, materials, energy, space, etc. , over the course of a project. The most important resources that project managers have to plan and manage on day-to-day basis are people, materials, equipment and working capital. Obviously, if these resources are available in abundance then the project could be accelerated to achieve shorter project duration. On the other hand, [Avoid using colloquial language, slang or jargon in formal writing (14)] if these resources are severely limited, then the result more than likely will be a delay in the project completion time. Depending on the type of resources, the costs of providing an abundance of such resources to accelerate project completion time can be very high. However, if resources are readily available and excess premiums are not incurred to use them on the project, then project cost should be low, as some project costs are resource related while others are likely to be time dependent. GROWTH PROFILE Attock Cement has a very fluctuating, or rather, a very inconsistent growth rate, as can be seen by the return on equity and return on assets ratios. Both the ratios were fairly decent in the year 2008, but then both saw a decline in consecutive years 2009 and 2010, after which they came back to an acceptable level in year 2011. RETURN ON INVESTMENT The return on investment of Attock Cement was again very unpredictable, fluctuating drastically between years 2008-2011. It touched a very high 32. 07% in year 2009, but then declined to a level which was similar to that in year 2008. Overall, the return on invested capital was at a satisfactory level as compared to Lucky Cement, which shows the positive nature of the companyââ¬â¢s investments. CREDIT PROFILEThe credit profile of Attock Cement is a fairly acceptable one, as can be seen by the decreasing leverage and debt to total capitalization ratios. This means that Attock Cement, like Lucky Cement, is also paying back its creditors and suppliers, which will mean that the lenders will be happy to lend money and raw materials to the company, as theyââ¬â¢re able to meet their financial obligations effectively. DG Khan Cement is paying a hefty amount as interest expense, which can be seen by the lower net income margin ratio of the firm, ranging from 0. 4-2. 46%. However, the EBIT and EBITDA margins of DG Khan Cement were quite satisfactory, and at pa r with the other two companies in the industry. GROWTH PROFILE DG Khan Cement has a very poor growth rate, evident by the very low return on equity and return on assets ratios. The growth of the company is badly hampered by the interest expense and the debt the firm has taken. Furthermore, the debt to total capitalization ratio of the company is also very high (higher than the other two companies in the industry), which was more than 50% in year 2009.These are negative implications for the company, and the investors must be unhappy with the performance of the firm. RETURN ON INVESTMENT: The return on invested capital for DG Khan Cement was also quite inadequate when comparing with that of Lucky and Attock Cement. It was 2. 39% in year 2008, increased to 8. 55% in year 2009, after which it settled on a level between 3-4% in years 2010-2011. This adversity was again due to the high debt ratio and hefty interest payments made by the company, because of which the return on investments w ere very low as compared to its competitors.CREDIT PROFILE: As opposed to its competitors, DG Khan Cement has a really horrific credit profile, as it is maintaining its debt to total capitalization and leverage ratios at a very high level and took up more loan in the year 2009, due to which its profitability is also getting affected adversely, and also its creditors and suppliers will be unwilling to lend DG Khan Cement more in the future, doubting the firmââ¬â¢s ability to pay them back, as it already has outstanding amounts to be received from the company. However, it under performed in comparison to the indus try. GROWTH PROFILE The growth rate has considerably improved from last year but the overall industry growth is much more than Fecto. The company needs to increase its growth by retaining more than half of its earnings and re-investing it to increase its income in the coming years otherwise it will fall way behind the industry and would take a long time to recover. RETURN ON INVESTMENT The return on investment has improved from the prior year. This implies that company is capitalizing its assets in a more efficient manner with an increase in the accumulated profits. However, it is not at all satisfactory in comparison to its competitors. CREDIT PROFILE: The debt to capitalization and leverage ratio is very high which means Fecto has more debt as compare to its equity. It has declined from the preceding year but it is fairly high with regards to its competitors. This shows a weak financial position as compared to the industry and poses more default risk for the company. However, the company needs to improve its asset management in order to compete with the industryGROWTH PROFILE The growth rate is improving as compare to the previous year which is surely a green sign for the company. From last year the earnings have fairly increased but Maple Leaf is still under performing as compared to the industry earning. A lot of efforts need to be put in for the company to be competing with the industry. RETURN ON INVESTMENT The return on investment is almost the same as compare to the last year. This means that the company needs to increase its sales in order to get a favorable outcome in the coming years. CREDIT PROFILEThe leverage ratio as well as the debt to equity ratio is fairly high as compare to the industry which refers to declining operational efficiency and ineffective asset management. Maple needs to decrease its reliance on debt to get a better ratio in the coming years.
